Budget Reconciliation Cannot Include Immigration Reform

Alternatives must be proposed after Senate Parliamentarian determination.

On Sunday, Elizabeth MacDonough, the Senate’s Parliamentarian determined that the Senate majority would not be able to pass any immigration reform measures through the budget reconciliation process. There had been hopes of updating the nation’s process for granting citizenship through the process that avoids the filibuster rules that require 60 votes to end debate.

In a written statement, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said of the announcement, “We are deeply disappointed in this decision but the fight to provide lawful status for immigrants in budget reconciliation continues.” He stated that his party has ”prepared alternate proposals and will be holding additional meetings with the Senate parliamentarian in the coming days.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the Senate as they consider alternatives for immigration reform.
  • For the Senate parliamentarian as she interprets the rules of the Senate.
  • For Senate Majority Leader Schumer to seek God’s guidance as he implements the next steps for the country.
